Geographic Literacy: Scary Statistics

  • Mood: surprised
  • Music: nothing
Another newsbit about education popped up on Yahoo today... this time about the surprising beliefs "1/3" of American youths hold about geography and world events this past year.

Geographic Literacy Appallingly Low

It is very surprising to me that not all the students polled at least knew where Louisiana is, especially since Hurricane Katrina dominated the news for over a year- and new fears about this year's hurricane season is starting.  All I can say is... what happened, dear teachers???

The other facts, well, I can see them not knowing them as the media doesn't really talk about what is happening in Asia all that much, and right now the hot topic of the day concerns immigration from Mexico.

It's still a scary thought though, that the successors of one of the most affluent and powerful countries in the world can't even find themselves properly on their own map; after years of memorizing the names of their presidents in order and their pledge of allegiance.

From watching the Amazing Race, I can see that not everyone knows how to read a map extremely well, but please... be able to find yourself and try not to take everything FOX news says as the truth.
