One of the popular bookmarking and recommending sites is delicious.  I've been using it for awhile when I'm bored and looking for something silly to waste time on.  Today however it dawned on me that other teachers might be using it to tag their favourite sites, so I checked out the education tags... don't know why I didn't do it sooner!!

Anyways, a link to a BBC news bit on how blogging can be beneficial for students as young as 7 years old... therefore proving I'm not just the only one who thinks it might be a great idea to try with grade ones and twos... why not? It gets them writing!  There are two main things with writing- communicating ideas and then using language (including form and format) that others can understand.  While student work on the web might not have the perfect grammar or the best spelling, or too much informalness to be compared to the great literary pieces, it satisfies the first component of writing: the idea part.  There is no use teaching students to use perfect grammar and how to spell if they don't feel like writing or if they think they are not good enough or important to write.

We teach students to write so that they can communicate with others.  That's the goal- how we get there, however, can always be different... and where we go when we get there? That's up to the individual.
